In Pursuit of Wildness: Canyon de Chelly National Monument

Canyon de Chelly National Monument is a place that my brother Leo has always talked about: “It is a sacred place. You easily go back in time.” He said that the town of Chinle has food, gas, convenience stores, and ample lodging but encouraged me to find the Cottonwood Campground inside the park. The campground, operated by the Navajo Nation Parks and Recreation Department, is perfect for the night. I normally lay out my camping tarp and sleep on the ground. Not tonight. There are millions of small red ants everywhere. Most of the other campers are in RV trailers. There are several cottonwood trees, so I rig up my hammock for the night. I make a mental note to stay at the Thunderbird Lodge, located inside the park, on my next trip.

2022 BMW GS Trophy Recap

The International BMW GS Trophy enduro event was held in early September for the eighth time, this time in Albania with 21 teams from 11 countries. It was a double win for South Africa, with podiums taken by England, Germany, and Mexico.

The BMW GS Trophy is a mega event held every two years in remote corners of the planet. This year, the Bavarian company had brought 126 R 1250 GS motorcycles to the beaches of the Adriatic coast of Albania, where 15 men’s teams with three riders each and six women’s teams with two riders each had to fight for victory through seven stages. Competition, yes—but no racing!

Snowbiking Serenity in Kalispell, Montana

I felt the crunch of compacting snow under my boot and before I knew it, I was face down—sunk to my hip in fresh powder with a Husqvarna TE 300 towering over me. The snow around my leg instantly solidified like concrete, locking my boot into place some 33-odd inches below the surface. I froze for a moment, too, imagining that this is just a taste of what it must feel like to be caught in the aftermath of an avalanche.

We were on top of roughly 10 feet of untouched snow, surrounded by mountains, and miles away from the main snowmobile trail. I made the mistake of getting off the bike to take a photo too close to a nearly covered tree. I had placed my foot smack dab in the middle of a tree well—something I was told earlier that morning I should avoid. At least the bike stayed in place, upright in the snow as if nothing had happened. It took some effort, but with the help of my three riding partners—Florian, Manuel, and Caleb—I managed to get my leg out of the snow and snap the photo I was dead-set on taking.
