Portland, Oregon Shamrock Tour
Birds aren’t real, the sticker on the back of the Subaru suggested. The faded green Outback was parked next to my 2025 Kawasaki Versys 650 LT outside the Evergreen Aviation and Space Museum in McMinnville, OR. The sticker was somehow appropriate, as we had come all this way to see the biggest bird of them all: the Spruce Goose.
Resting comfortably inside a purpose-built glass and steel structure, Howard Hughes’ creation stretched out across the room. The plane towers over you like an apartment building at 80 feet tall and with a 320-foot wingspan (although it’s been shortened to fit the plane in the museum). Officially known as the H-4 Hercules, it was built during World War II, but didn’t make its inaugural flight until November 1947. Hughes built the H-4 hoping to transport troops across the Atlantic, but myriad problems prevented the “heavy transport flying boat” from fulfilling its destiny. It flew once, in the final months of 1947—70 feet off the water, at 135 mph, for 26 seconds.

Billings, Montana Shamrock Tour
When we arrived at our home base in Billings, MT, we immediately started asking locals about the weather and roads west of town. Our first stop of the trip was going to be Yellowstone by way of the Beartooth Pass, but it had just snowed recently. To play it safe, we decided to pivot to the Chief Joseph Scenic Byway, which would give the snow a bit more time to clear up on Beartooth before we took it on the way back.

Ithaca, NY Shamrock Tour
Finger Lakes tours are unique and epic in beauty, loaded with vistas of lakes, gorges, waterfalls, vineyards, sunsets over water, and historical sites. Touring this region differs from many others, because it’s more about the destinations than the riding. The attraction is in its places.
The winding roads are short, climbing the hills embracing each lake. Motorcyclists, like everyone else, are drawn to the Finger Lakes because it’s a nice place to be. Having grown up nearby, I am intimately familiar with the places of this area, some of which are part of who I am.

The Crooked Roads of Floyd, Virginia
It was a typical Tuesday night, kicking back after a long day in the photography studio, when I got the call. Josh’s voice said, “I’ve got something for you.” No further details were necessary. I knew it meant a ride—better still, riding and taking pictures documenting our ride along the way.
As a full-time studio photographer in Raleigh, NC, with a few appointments already scheduled, I knew I had to make this happen. So, I decided to pull some extra hours and move a few things around to clear my schedule. After several full days in the studio, I was excited to have an opportunity to shoot for RoadRUNNER. It was a new experience for me, as I’m typically photographing in a controlled studio environment with subjects that aren’t moving at 50 miles an hour.

Kernville, California Dual Sport Shamrock Tour
Southern California’s Kernville is a four-season tourist town nestled between the southern end of the Sierra Nevada and the north shore of Lake Isabella, one of the state’s largest man-made reservoirs. A destination for white water rafting, boating, fly-fishing, mountain biking, hiking, and other outdoor activities, the town’s population of 1,600 souls multiplies dramatically on busy summer weekends. Accordingly, the Old West-themed town features gold rush-era architecture, a panoply of lodging and dining options, and a couple of full-service shops that sell everything from snowshoes to sunscreen to lead sinkers.
Kernville has an odd history. Named after Edward Kern, who mapped the area in 1845 with John C. Fremont, it later gained the moniker of Whiskey Flat after a saloon opened after a gold strike. Later on, the town was renamed Kernville, but it was destroyed by the flooding that created Lake Isabella in 1845. Some of the original town’s extant buildings can still be seen at the bottom of the lake when the water level is low.

Maggie Valley, North Carolina Shamrock Tour
It was chilly and a light mist hung in the air as we set off on our first route. Wearing only a mesh jacket, I quickly remembered that even though it was 80 degrees back home, the mountains are on their own weather schedule. Luckily, I had packed a rain jacket in the saddlebag of the Ducati Scrambler I was riding, which saved me from an uncomfortable 190 miles. With the fog hanging low and roads damp, we followed a route I would only attempt during the week in the off-season.

Duluth, Minnesota Shamrock Tour
While the rest of the country is just discovering Duluth, Midwestern motorcyclists have been in love with this gem at the westernmost tip of Lake Superior for ages. All the same things that make Duluth such a welcoming place to resettle—the laid-back “Minnesota Nice” lifestyle, millions of acres of readily accessible public woods, and hundreds of miles of dramatic freshwater coastline—also make Minnesota’s North Shore one of America’s best destinations for motorcycle touring. So, I gathered my riding buddies Brad and Gio, and headed way up north to check the area out.
