Review: Third Eye Design inView 2 Helmet Signal Light

Motorcyclist visibility has long been a critical concern, and the Third Eye Design inView 2 tackles this challenge head-on in a unique way. This kit adds a running, brake, and turn signal light module to the back of your motorcycle helmet.

Drivers approaching you from the rear will have no choice but to notice you with this additional lighting. This helmet-mounted lighting can help take your commuting safety up a notch.

Installation Experience

The inView 2 comes with three primary components: a helmet-mounted LED receiver, a motorcycle-mounted transceiver, and an auxiliary brake light. Installing the system was fairly straightforward, although did take about an hour to complete.

The transceiver unit needed careful positioning to avoid interference from large metal surfaces and exposure to the elements. Mounting it under the seat provided both protection and accessibility. The wiring process required tapping into the bike’s electrical system for brake lights, turn signals, and ignition power.

It’s worth noting that if you have a brake light modulator installed on your bike (like I do) then the transceiver must be connected upstream of the modulator in order to work properly. Also, in order for the InView 2 to provide optimal passive braking functionality (using the accelerometer), you will need to connect the unit to the app on your phone so that the orientation can be set.

Affixing the helmet-mounted receiver was pretty easy. The included 3M mounting tape held the unit securely in place, and its slim profile integrated well with my helmet’s design.

Aligning it for optimal functionality was aided by the unit’s built-in orientation test, which emits alerts if it’s mounted upside down.

The final step was adding the auxiliary brake light. This additional light mirrors the helmet unit’s functions, providing a cohesive signal system for following traffic.

Drivers behind you will be more likely to realize the connection between your slowing down and the light on your helmet when the auxiliary brake light is also illuminating.

Performance on the Road

Out on the road, the inView 2 truly shines—literally. The helmet-mounted LED receiver makes brake and turn signals highly noticeable to vehicles behind you.

The integrated accelerometer is a standout feature, triggering brake lights even during engine braking or downshifting. This passive braking functionality provides an extra layer of safety, especially in unpredictable traffic.

The bright LEDs are visible even in daylight, but are, of course, more effective at night. The helmet unit’s wireless connectivity to the transceiver worked flawlessly, with no noticeable lag between bike signals and helmet light activation.

Almost instantly, I noticed drivers following me with more distance than usual. Even though I never let my guard down while riding, I did feel as if I was safer with the bright, visible lights on the back of my head.

Ease of Use

The inView 2 is a “set it and forget it” system. It powers up automatically with the bike’s ignition, performs self-diagnostics, and alerts the user about any issues.

The batteries last about one riding season before needing to be replaced. If you ride very often, you can expect up to two months before needing to change the batteries.

There is no on/off switch, and the device will notify you when the batteries are low. This latest version of the light is more compact on the helmet and comes with either a red or clear lens.

The only downside to this product is that it is motorcycle/helmet-specific. If you have six different helmets and motorcycles, you’ll need separate kits for each pair.

You may also have to forgo the additional safety on fly-and-ride tours. It’s not always practical to go through the installation process when you pick up your motorcycle, and it may not even be allowed, depending on the rental company policies.

However, if you have an established motorcycle/helmet combo that you use for the majority of your riding, this is the kit for you. The InView 2 is a well-rounded safety accessory that enhances rider visibility without requiring constant attention or maintenance.

At $299.95, it’s a worthy investment for safety-conscious riders. Whether you’re commuting through city traffic or embarking on long-distance tours, the InView 2 offers peace of mind and a notable safety upgrade.
