The Next Episode—A Letter from Florian
Looking through our archive to find early photos of RoadRUNNER, it is difficult not to get emotional. Some photos immediately transport me back to not just the moment, but the whole day. I remember where we rode and how we settled the “Where are we riding today?” debate over breakfast. I can recall the gear I wore, where we stopped for lunch and what I ordered, and so on. Digging even deeper into our archive, looking at slides and negatives, I realized I’ve been around motorcycles way longer than I thought. This journey didn’t start with the inception of RoadRUNNER. It was much earlier than that.
Over the winter, my son Oliver graduated from an electric balance bike to a legitimate trials motorcycle. Instead of riding around on a toy for 20 minutes, he’s honing his skills on an Oset TXP-20 for well over an hour each day. Riding a real motorcycle meant he needed real gear. As soon as it arrived, his first question was whether I could now take him on a ride on my motorcycle outside our little neighborhood. You know, go a little faster and travel a little farther away from home.
When he got on the passenger seat, his feet were firmly planted on the pegs. How did that happen? Just months ago, his legs dangled off that very same seat. When I looked at him, he was beaming, grinning from ear to ear. He knew. We suited up and rolled out on his first outing with me, seeing the world on two wheels. This little curveball, however predictable, caught me off guard and took me back to my first motorcycle rides with my parents. Memories came rushing in like a waterfall.
The best part is I now get to rework my travel plans, because I have a new riding companion to share adventures with. Our six-year-old isn’t far behind. He already said he wants to squeeze between Oliver and me and come along, too. Soon, Alex—don’t grow up too fast. It’s another reminder for all of us to take lots of pictures. You’ll never know when you want to use photos as a time machine and look back at all of the fun things you’ve done.
With the riding season just around the corner, I’m sure you’ve spent many days planning your own trips this year. If you’re late to the game, though, this issue has you covered. Our recent web articles showcase motorcycle-friendly destinations from coast to coast that invite you to check out their local roads and trails, family-owned businesses, and comfortable accommodations.
