Review: El Rey Court—Santa Fe, NM

Review: El Rey Court—Santa Fe, NM

El Rey Court in Santa Fe is a classic Route 66 motor court with deep roots in the Mother Road’s history. Opened in 1936, it provides a convenient and stylish stop for motorcyclists exploring the high desert of New Mexico. The property’s adobe architecture gives it an unmistakably Southwestern charm, with low-slung buildings, stucco walls, tile floors, and cozy courtyards.

During our Route 66 journey, we stayed at El Rey Court, and the rooms made us feel instantly at home. Each space reflects the region’s heritage, blending warm earth tones, local artwork, and vintage-inspired touches with modern comfort.

The property has expanded from its original 12 rooms to 86 across five acres, offering amenities like a pool, hot tub, and the on-site La Reina bar.

What makes El Rey Court special is how it honors its past while catering to today’s travelers. You can still feel the history of the Mother Road here, from the classic motor court layout to the sense of community it fosters.

Nearby Roads

Santa Fe is a jumping-off point for some of northern New Mexico’s most scenic riding. Head northeast up SR 475 into the canyons for twisties and ponderosa pines.

The southbound SR 14 (also called the Turquoise Trail) drops you into Madrid and Cerrillos through a mix of sweepers and history. It’s a great breakfast-or-brunch run.

For desert-wide views and long accelerations, take US 285 north toward Española, or carve into the Sangre de Cristo foothills on the SR 599 loop for elevation changes and skyline vistas. Of course, El Rey Court sits right along the early alignment of historic Route 66.

Food & Dining

Santa Fe’s culinary scene is as vibrant as the sunsets. You’ll find classic New Mexican staples alongside elevated Southwestern fare. Think red and green chile-smothered breakfasts, handmade tortillas, rich beef stew, and fiery sopapillas. At night, mezcal and tequila flow freely alongside locally sourced ingredients and inventive fusion dishes.
