Is Premium Fuel Really Better for Motorcycles?

Shop Talk: Is Premium Fuel Really Better for Motorcycles? | RoadRUNNER Motorcycle Touring & Travel

When it comes to feeding your motorcycle, the choice between regular and premium gasoline often raises questions about cost, performance, and long-term engine health. Is premium fuel always the right choice, or are there situations where regular fuel is more appropriate?

Let’s dive into your fuel tank and find out whether you should always run premium fuel in a motorcycle.

The Ignition Characteristics of High-Octane Fuels

A common misconception about high-octane fuel is that it inherently “burns better” or “makes more power” than lower-octane fuel. In reality, the octane rating of gasoline reflects its resistance to ignition under compression, not its energy content.

Higher-octane fuels, such as 93 octane, are harder to ignite than lower-octane fuels, like 87 octane. This increased resistance to ignition makes high-octane fuel essential for high-performance engines with higher compression ratios or forced induction, which create extreme pressures and temperatures in the combustion chamber.
