Putting the ‘S’ in Scenic—Salmon River Scenic Byway

Idaho may not be the first state that pops to your mind when planning a motorcycle tour. You shouldn’t ignore the Gem State, though, or you’ll miss out on some first-rate roads—like the Salmon River Scenic Byway.

This 163-mile route certainly deserves the “scenic” moniker, with a capital S. It takes you through rugged mountainscapes, expansive riverside vistas, and majestic conifer forests alike.

The Salmon River Scenic Byway covers sections of US 93 and SR 75. From its northern terminus at Lost Trail Pass on the Idaho-Montana border, the scenery looks much like it did 200 years ago when Lewis and Clark passed through the same pass (although they could only dream about an excellent paved road like this).

As you start the ride, the road descends through a series of exciting turns—including a few switchbacks—and awe-inspiring mountain views. Some 25 miles later, US 93 meets up with Salmon River, one of the wildest rivers in Idaho.
