Horses and Bourbon—Versailles, KY
Riding a motorcycle to Versailles isn’t something most bikers get to do. That is, unless you ride to the other Versailles that’s surrounded by the green fields of Kentucky.
Unlike its counterpart, however, the name of this place is pronounced “ver-sailz.” That’s because you ain’t in France, son.
Versailles was founded in 1792, and it’s indeed named after the fabulous palace in France. It was so dubbed by Marquis Calmes IV — the caretaker of the infant who owned the land the town stood on — in honor of his family friend, General Lafayette.
Talk about a kid having connections.
Back in its early days, Versailles established itself as a major hub for livestock and horse breeding. And that’s what it is still today, with local farms raising thoroughbred racehorses, among others.
If you’re interested in horse racing in addition to motorcycles, the country roads around Versailles make for an excellent, calm cruising experience. You won’t find many curves, but you will pass expansive, tranquil fields with their horses.
