Conoco Tower Station— Shamrock Texas
The Conoco Tower Station, also known as the U-Drop Inn, is one of Route 66’s most iconic stops. Built in 1936, this art deco structure served as a gas station on one side and a cafe on the other, immediately becoming a hub for travelers.
Its most striking feature is the needle-like tower, reportedly inspired by a simple nail in the ground. At its opening, the U-Drop Inn was heralded as “the swankiest of the swank” eateries along Route 66, attracting motorists from across the Panhandle.

After a slow decline in the latter half of the 20th century, the building was purchased by Shamrock’s First National Bank in 1999 and restored to its former glory. Today, it functions as a visitor center and museum, welcoming Route 66 enthusiasts with its neon glow and historical charm. You can also get a hot cup of coffee and quick snacks in the cafe.
