Kriega US-Drypack System: Versatile Dry Packing

Kriega US-Drypack System: Versatile Dry Packing

Picture your ideal motorcycle bag system. What would it be like? A strong contender would be something that’s weatherproof, versatile, and compact.

That’s what the Kriega US-Drypack system brings to your bike.

Kriega’s US-Drypack system consists of five different bags: the US-5, US-10, US-20, and US-30 Drypacks and the US-40 Rackpack. The convenience starts with the naming scheme, which tells you exactly how many liters of storage you can expect.

Structure and Waterproofing

The bags have a stuff sack-type construction, being made of a flexible material with a large central compartment. They’re built from Cordura nylon (also a popular material for motorcycle jeans), making them withstand bumps and scratches. The larger and more robust Rackpack features both Cordura and Hypalon for extra toughness.

The sides and tops of the bags have an extra flap of material sewn on them for added durability. Even after several hundred miles on a bike, they’re not worse for wear.

Inside the bags is a white, removable liner that serves a dual purpose. First, it makes it easier to see what you have in the bags; second, the liner makes cleaning the bags easy.

On the top of the bags is an additional zippered compartment. The bottom has a mesh compartment for less vulnerable items. These are probably meant for quick access, but you’ll find out later why the access may not always be so quick.

The Drypacks and Rackpack alike have rolltop closures, which are completely waterproof (as long as you close them properly). That’s not empty marketing talk—rain is hard-pressed to get into any of the compartments. They really live up to the “Drypack” moniker.

Concerning the roll closures, they add a nice touch to the US-40 Rackpack. It delivers the promised 40 liters, but you can roll both ends of the bag in to shrink it to 28 liters. That’s handy for quicker one-night jaunts where you might not pack as much, as it keeps the ends of the bag from flapping in the breeze.

As a unique touch, the Rackpack also has a dedicated reinforced channel for holding tent poles. Moto campers, you’re welcome.

Mounting

Fixing the Drybags and Rackpack to your bike is simple, in the sense that they do not require any dedicated mounting racks. They feature Kriega’s universal fit mounting system consisting of loops and straps that works with virtually any rack (or probably even with just your bike’s frame).

In practice, though, the strap system does get a little convoluted. There are a lot of straps and hooks to tie in place if you follow the instruction manual. Once you’ve done it a couple of times and get the hang of it, the whole process gets much easier, but there is a learning curve.

On the flipside, once the bag is strapped in, it’s not going anywhere. Frankly, your belongings would probably be perfectly safely attached with half the loops, but better safe than sorry.

Versatility

The US-Drypack system is very versatile, as it allows you to attach the bags to each other for added carrying capacity. Not only that, they can also serve you off the bike.

Each of the bags features attachment loops that allow you to daisy chain them together for added carrying capacity. So strap to your heart’s content and build the ultimate motorcycle bag setup you always wanted.

If you do attach the bags together, though, be aware that you may end up blocking some of the top, side, and bottom pockets from easy access with the straps. You can mitigate that by putting some thought into your arrangement.

Don’t want your bags in the back of your bike? No problem. The Kriega tank converter (sold separately for $49.99) allows you to turn the US-5, US-10, or US-20 Drypacks into tankbags. The converter unit, with its extra straps, attaches to the tank, and the Drypack ties on top of it.

For carrying the bags after the ride, the US-20 and US-30 Drypacks and the US-40 Rackpack come with detachable waist and shoulder carrying straps that allow you to throw them onto your back. The smaller Drypacks don’t include a carrying strap, but with the abundance of loops, you can hook almost any belt or bandolier onto them.

Final Verdict

The Kriega US-Drypack system is an excellent option for any ride that can accommodate soft bags. The bags have top-notch waterproofing, can take some serious punishment (the stuff you put in them may not), and you can mix and match them to fit your carrying needs.

If there is a downside, it’s the number of straps the attachment system requires. Then again, it’s worth the effort since you don’t need to buy expensive mounts or adapters. Also, the attachment system is sturdy, so there’s not much to complain about.

Long story short, if you’re on the hunt for a modular and durable system that will keep your belongings bone dry, give the Kriega US-Drypack system a serious look.
