Honda Celebrates Producing 500 Million Motorcycles

May 22, 2025, was a big day for Honda. On that date, the company’s 500-millionth motorcycle rolled off the assembly line.

The bike—a Honda Activa scooter—was manufactured at the Honda Motorcycle and Scooter India facility in Vitthalapur. To commemorate this momentous milestone, Honda staged an official ceremony at the factory.

“I would like to thank our customers and all stakeholders who were involved in achieving this milestone, from development to production, sales and service. Honda will continue to take on the challenge of expanding the joy of our customers around the world,” said Toshihiro Mibe, Honda’s president, CEO, and director.

Honda certainly didn’t build 500 million motorcycles overnight. It has taken the company 76 years to reach this point.

The Japanese brand considers the 1949 Dream D-Type its first mass-produced motorcycle and calculates all of its production milestones from when the first D-Type was completed. In 1963, Honda started international manufacturing in Belgium before expanding to the U.S. in 1979.

It took until 1997 for Honda to roll out its 100-millionth bike. In just 11 years, the 200-million unit milestone arrived in 2008, followed by 300 million in 2014 and 400 million in 2019.

If this pace keeps up, we can likely expect the 600-millionth Honda motorcycle to crop up some time in 2030 or soon after. That is, unless the company surpasses itself and takes us by surprise earlier.
