Unusual Destinations: Hotel Lenhart

Hotel Lenhart,, Bemus Point, NY

While on tour for a forthcoming RoadRUNNER magazine article, I stopped for lunch in Bemus Point, NY, a charming village on the shores of Lake Chautauqua in western New York. While walking around town, Hotel Lenhart came into view. It looked like a filming location for a movie set in the 19th century. With its covered veranda, Adirondack chairs neatly arranged on the lush green front lawn and the quaint roadside hotel sign, the hotel certainly seemed to be a step back in time. But there was something unsettling about the hotel’s almost too perfect period ambiance.

Subsequent research revealed that paranormal investigators have descended on the Lenhart Hotel and concluded that it is haunted by an unidentified presence. The hotel opened for business in 1880 and there have been few modern amenities added since then, like: air conditioning, central heat and bathrooms in all of the guest rooms. That aside, the most common paranormal complaint by guests is the sensation of an invisible someone tugging on their hair or clothing, and of, course, there’s the usual unexplained slamming of doors.

“Ghostly” destinations and cable TV programs about them have become something of a business model for attracting a lucrative segment of the population. Hotel Lenhart may not be everyone’s “cup of tea,” but for those who think it might be theirs’, find it at 20-22 Lakeside Drive, Bemus Point, NY, (716) 386-2715, www.hotellenhart.com. By the way, you may want to keep a light on at night, just sayin’.
