Trans-Allegheny Lunatic Asylum

This Unusual Destination is a hotspot frequented by paranormal enthusiasts. It would be a most memorable Halloween experience, if you dared to go there. In front of the massive gothic-style building in Weston, WV, a sign announces the “Trans-Allegheny Lunatic Asylum.” Construction of the facility began in 1858. Originally designed to hold 250 people, at its peak in the 1950s, the vastly expanded mental hospital housed around 2,400 patients.

The main building is reportedly one of the largest hand-cut masonry buildings in America and was designated a National  Historic Landmark in 1990. Although it was closed down in 1994 due to overcrowding and outdated patient therapies, restless souls are said to still roam the vacuous hallways. Ghost and historical tours are offered by the current owner to fund historical preservation. But just gazing at the main building in broad daylight, can give passersby the creeps.

Find it at 71 Asylum Drive • Weston, WV, (304) 269-5070,  www.trans-alleghenylunaticasylum.com
