Bucket List Roads

To the surprise of many riders, the roads in the Appalachian foothills of southeast Ohio are some of the most technically challenging in the Lower 48. Although the elevation changes are not as dramatic as East or West Coast mountain ranges, the hills can be particularly challenging to ascend when there is no advance indication of the direction of travel on the downside. Route 536, because of its continuously curvy layout, has been dubbed Ohio’s Tail of the Dragon.

Best Time to Go: Spring and fall
Scenery: Bucolic rolling hills of rural America
Curves: Virtually continuous
Traffic: Usually very light
Distance: Approximately 12 miles, but it will seem longer
Time Required: About half an hour, one way
Technical Difficulty: High, especially at speed; several tight decreasing radius turns.
