Pennsylvania map

The narrow ridges and valleys of South Central Pennsylvania take motorcyclists into secluded enclaves hidden in off-the-beaten-path valleys. Riders start and finish in historic McConnellsburg, PA. The map indicates a clockwise riding direction, but the adventure is equally rewarding by going in a counter-clockwise direction. Roadside services can be found in McConnellsburg, Lewistown, and Orbisonia, PA.
Points of Interest:

  • Amish Big Valley: State Route 655 transports riders back to the 19th century in this valley of Amish farms.
  • Jacks Mountain Overlook: A turnout on Jacks Mountain provides riders with a breathtaking panoramic vista of two verdant valleys, including the Amish Big Valley.
  • East Broad Top Railroad: This short-line narrow gauge railroad is no longer operating, but the train station, roundhouse, and other buildings are still there.
  • Historic Lincoln Highway: A short ride on the nation’s first transcontinental highway.

Scenery: Backroad byways follow creeks and rivers through cultivated landscapes in narrow valleys, climb steep mountain ridges, and travel through charming, back-in-time villages.

Curves: Elevation changes and all manner of curves are virtually constant as riders traverse a rumpled landscape.

Traffic: Light

Distance: Approximately 185 miles

Time Required: Most of a day

Technical Difficulty: Moderate. Road quality is generally good. Watch for slow-moving farm equipment and Amish buggies (and the, ahem, “road apples” left on the pavement by horses).
