RoadRUNNER Editor Spotlight: Jim ParksYou’ve read their articles and perhaps met them out on the road or at RoadRUNNER‘s annual Touring Weekend, but what do you know about our illustrious group of writers and editors? We decided to ask each one a few simple questions and share their responses with you, next up, frequent touring article author and Director of Public Relations, Jim Parks.

Name: James Parks
Current city and state: Rockville, MD

  1. How and when did you start riding? I started riding at age 17 and was completely self-taught, which I would highly discourage anyone else from doing.
  2. What was your first bike? 1963 Honda Dream (300cc), which I shared with my dad.
  3. Tell us your favorite road where you live? Harpers Ferry Road in Maryland.
  4. Current ride (or bike you ride the most)? 2014 BMW F 800 GS Adventure
  5. Number one Bucket List Road? I recently got to ride Stelvio Pass in Italy, twice.

What are the best and worst bikes you’ve ever ridden and how did they earn that distinction?

Worst: Buell Ulysses, which I nicknamed “Shake and Bake,” because of the extraordinary vibration and heat.

Best: There are too many to narrow down to just one so here are some of my favorites:

  • Ducati Multistrada: Nimble and powerful sport touring bike, superior handling.
  • BMW F 800 GS Adventure: Does it all, both on pavement and gravel.
  • 2013 Honda CB 1100: Fun to ride, retro styling, reliability and comfort.
  • 1989 Honda GB 500: Classic café racer looks combined with Honda reliability.
  • Honda ST1300: Most comfortable sport-touring bike, smooth power delivery, low center of gravity, and love the design.
  • Kawasaki Concours: Awesome linear power!
  • Moto Guzzi Norge: Great handling for such a large bike.
  • Honda Gold Wing: Smooth as silk power delivery and ride; very comfortable.

Be sure to catch up with last week’s spotlight, Ken Freund.
