40th Anniversary Gold Wing and Honda’s 2015 Model LineupThe year was 1974, and the place was Cologne, Germany, at the International Motorcycle Show. Honda, one of the big four Japanese motorcycle companies, introduced a model called the Gold Wing GL1000. The bike was targeted at riders who wanted to cover serious mileage on their two-wheeled machines, which was a somewhat novel concept at the time. The rest, as they say, is history with Honda having sold over 640,000 Gold Wings in the 40 years since. Gold Wings have become synonymous with long-distance motorcycle touring and have developed a cult following like few other motorcycles in history.

To celebrate the Gold Wing’s 40th, Honda has released a special anniversary edition, but don’t get too excited, as it’s just new paint colors that differentiate it from the GL1800 that’s soldiered on with only incremental alterations since 2001. The 40th anniversary paint job is a two-tone Candy Red and Black (pictured above).

New colors and aesthetic changes are sprinkled across the Interstate, Fury, Stateline, and Shadow Aero models. The Shadow Phantom returns for 2015 with blacked out styling refinements and, you guessed it, a new color (Light Silver Metallic).
