RoadRUNNER Editor Spotlight: Steve MaukYou’ve read their articles and perhaps met them out on the road or at RoadRUNNER‘s annual Touring Weekend, but what do you know about our illustrious group of writers and editors? We decided to ask each one a few simple questions and share their responses with you, next up, frequent contributor and Road Rash author, Steve Mauk.

Name: Steve Mauk
Current City and State: Nashport, OH

  1. How and when did you start riding? I started riding around 1970 or 1971 when my brother and I got a small mini bike for Christmas.
  2. What was your first bike? My first street legal bike was a 1976 Suzuki TS 185.
  3. Tell us your favorite road where you live? My favorite local roads are the seemingly endless selection of dirt roads winding through the Southern Ohio hills. Sorry, but I can’t pick just one!
  4. Current ride (or bike you ride the most)? I split my riding between a 2005 Suzuki DL650 V-Strom and a 2012 Kawasaki KLR650. Although basic, both bikes are comfortable, capable, and reliable, and they are well suited to the types of roads that I enjoy.
  5. Number one Bucket List Road? Stelvio Pass in Italy is probably at the top of my bucket list.

What are the best and worst bikes you’ve ever ridden and how did they earn that distinction?

Best: Although I don’t ride an enormous number of bikes, the best all-around bike that I rode recently is Suzuki’s new DL1000 V-Strom.

Worst: A 1975(?) Kawasaki H-1 500cc two-stroke triple, which I barely avoided looping over backward during a test ride. Six-thousand rpm and second gear was a dangerous combination on the bike, and the blend of brutal power and poor chassis knocked the H-1 completely off my wish list after one short ride.

Be sure to catch up with last week’s spotlight, John Flores.
