2014 BMW GS Trophy: International CompetitionEvery year amateur riders from all over the world come together to test their skills against some of the most challenging motorcycling terrain on earth, hoping to bring the coveted GS Trophy back to their home country. The 2014 edition of the GS Trophy competition starts in just a week or so in the Rockies of Western Canada. The teams will compete in a number of challenges as they cover 1,200 miles, mostly off-road, over seven days. Along the way they’ll face a variety of challenges designed to test their teamwork, navigational skills, ability to live and survive in the wild, and, of course, their riding prowess. The organizers are quick to point out that the GS Trophy competition is not a race.

To make sure all things are equal, each rider will get an identical BMW R 1200 GS that has been set up specifically for the GS Trophy event. Herbert Schwarz, Executive Director of Touratech, is in charge of preparing the bikes. He says, “With 70 percent of the route off-road and many challenging special tests, it’s important to have the bikes optimized for the conditions. A selection of parts has been taken from the catalogues of BMW and Touratech to ensure the bikes have the protection that they’ll need while also providing the riders with the control and navigational functions that are imperative. Furthermore, each bike has been equipped with special edition Metzeler Karoo tires and crash protection from Touratech. Preparing all 92 bikes has been a huge task!”

The event gets underway September 6-13 and will include 48 riders in 16 teams from 19 nations.
