Book Review: Down and Out in Patagonia, Kamchatka, and TimbuktuThough it’s generally a no no, sometimes you can judge a book by its cover. In the case of Down and Out by Dr. Gregory Frazier, the cover image of a motorcycle lying on its side on a sandy “road” is a fitting and accurate visual representation of the book’s content. Dr. Frazier refers to himself as a Professional Motorcycle Adventurer, and it’s a title he’s certainly earned. Having circled the globe no less than five times and traveled well over 1,000,000 miles by motorcycle, Frazier’s life has truly been spent on the road. Though Frazier has authored a variety of books previously, Down and Out is the first autobiographical account encompassing the entire scope of his adventures.

The tale begins with a no holds barred recount of his childhood and of how he first came to a life on two wheels. From there the reader is invited to join him on his journey through his teenage years through adulthood. The story is immediately engaging, pulling you in from the first few words. The adventure continues to deepen as the tale unfolds, and all along the way spectacular photography ensures that your imagination doesn’t have to work too hard. Perhaps the most refreshing aspect of Dr. Frazier’s storytelling is that he doesn’t take himself too seriously. The crashed bike on the cover is a theme that’s repeated throughout the book with numerous photographs of his various motorcycles lying on their sides. In the end, Down and Out in Patagonia, Kamchatka, and Timbuktu is a thoroughly enjoyable, beautifully illustrated tale of one man’s addiction to motorcycle travel. It’s a story that will make any motorcyclist both jealous and inspired.

About the author

There’s something relentlessly romantic about riding a motorcycle. I’m blessed to know that feeling. With a background in photography and a love for motorcycles, I’m interested in the beauty and honesty of the open road. You’ll find me riding Carolina’s roads on my Suzuki SV650.
