Review: AeroMoto Sport Leather Motorcycle Jacket

Review: AeroMoto Sport Leather Motorcycle JacketThe combination of clean, simple styling, good materials, and low price doesn’t come around too often so when it does you’ve got to take a look. AeroMoto is one of the in-house brands of motorcycle gear distributor Competition Accessories, and the elimination of the middleman is why the price is so reasonable. That old saying “you get what you pay for” is true here, and then some.

To begin with, the quality of this jacket is shockingly high for this price point. The leather is thick (1.2-1.3mm) and has a nice, premium feel to go along with that rich smell that motorcyclists love so much. Important seams are double stitched, the zippers are from YKK, and the jacket is nicely cut. The only places where the Sport seems a bit cheap are in the zip out thermal liner and the built in armor. The liner performs its function, but it’s only a vest and the sleeves remain unlined. The shoulder and elbow armor, while CE approved, don’t feel as thick or, well, protective as those from other jackets I’ve worn. Of course, this is entirely subjective and there’s no (safe) way to tell how any piece of gear will fair in an actual crash. Back protection is a simple foam pad, but that’s par for the course in this price range.

Fit is tight in the style of racing leathers with pre-curved sleeves and a short torso. The cuffs zip open and closed with a Velcro cover to keep the zipper pulls in place. The fit around the wrist is so tight that taking the jacket off actually requires unzipping them. That’s not a bad thing, however, as it helps keep wind from running up the sleeves and allows the jacket to work great with both gauntlet and short style gloves.

The Sport is not meant for all-season wear. There’s not much in the way of ventilation, and the only real nod to versatility is the aforementioned zip out thermal liner. Competition Accessories does offer the virtually identical AeroMoto Sport Air Jacket with perforated leather in place of the Sport’s solid material for riding in warmer temperatures.

Some nice finishing touches include a neoprene ring around the collar, which adds a high-end feel and makes a surprising difference in comfort for your neck. There’s also a waist connection zipper to pair the Sport with AeroMoto’s Corsa Pro leather pants, which, for a combined price of about $350(!), gives you a full two-piece set of leathers.

To say the AeroMoto Sport Leather Jacket pleasantly surprised me would be quite the understatement. A more accurate world would be “impressed.” This is truly a quality product at an affordable price. So if you’re looking for a leather jacket, it’s hard to do better than that.
