2014 Kawasaki Z1000In Japanese, the word sugomi implies “someone or something that inspires awe, leaves an indelible impression, is daunting in stature or ability, and commands respect.” It is also Kawasaki’s design theme for the 2014 Z1000, which was intended to invoke the looks of “a predatory animal stalking its prey.” And if that’s what they were going for, we think they nailed it.

The Z1000 certainly looks intimidating, and with a variety of updates it should have the performance to back up its predatory persona. The 1,043cc inline four gets updated intake cams to help low to midrange torque output while new airbox vents and cylinder passageways improve airflow to boost performance at mid to high RPM. Kawasaki has not released horsepower figures, but reports on the 2013 bike come in at around 120 horsepower at the rear wheel, so we expect that a few more have been added for 2014. Big Green has also modified the ECU to deliver sharper throttle response.

The Z1000 also gets some fancy braking hardware. Four piston radial-mount monobloc calipers squeeze dual 310mm petal rotors up front while a single piston caliper slows a 250mm petal disc out back. ABS is standard, and a fluid pressure sensor in the ABS pump gives better control and supplies the ECU with information that helps keep the rear planted during heavy braking.

Other 2014 upgrades include a larger 4.5-gallon fuel tank, shorter ratios in low gears with a taller sixth gear for fuel economy and highway comfort, Showa Separate Function Big Piston Fork and monoshock, lightweight aluminum wheels, new instrument display, and much more. Kawasaki lists the streetfighter’s curb weight at 487.3 pounds. The Z1000 will come in either Golden Blazed Green or Metallic Graphite Gray. Owning a 2014 “segomi” will set you back $11,999.
