RoadRUNNER’s Bucket List Roads: Kancamagus Highway In New HampshireThe “Kanc” (aka New Hampshire SR-112) proves that longer is not always better. This famous scenic byway takes riders along a serpentine path cut through New Hampshire’s White Mountains. You’ll find several campgrounds and hiking trails, but, other than that, this slice of New England has been kept in its natural state. So fill your tank and empty your bladder before departing, because you’ll find no modern conveniences along the route.

Scenery: With waterfalls, gorges, rushing rivers, panoramic overlooks and lush foliage, this scenic byway is a true delight for the eyes. Due to the presence of wildlife and blind curves, maintain a prudent rate of speed.

Curves: Tight curves abound on good pavement that tracks numerous elevation changes.

Traffic: Generally light

Distance: The “Kanc” is usually considered to be the section of SR-112 from Conway, NH to Lincoln, NH (approximately 26 mi.), but SR-112 is a fabulous route that can be enjoyed all the way to its intersection with US 302, near the Vermont border (an additional 22 miles).

Time Required: 1 to 2 hours, depending on stops.

Technical Difficulty: Challenging curves and steep mountain grades.
