RoadRUNNER’s Bucket List Roads: Moonshiner 28

This issue’s featured Bucket Road begins at Deals Gap (aka the Tail of the Dragon) in western North Carolina, passes through northern Georgia and ends some 103 miles later in Walhalla, SC. Since the road carries the designation of Route 28 in all three states, it will be hard to get lost.

This road had the moonshiner nickname attached to it because the route was once favored by moonshine haulers. Driving at breakneck speeds on treacherous mountain roads, the expert moonshine drivers, in their bored, stroked, and blown hot rods, were more than a match for the outclassed government revenuers chasing them.

Moonshiner 28, with its posted speeds of up to 55 mph, greater length, light traffic, spectacular scenery, evocative towns, sweet sweepers, and tantalizing twisties, is a great complement, or alternative, to the Tail of the Dragon.

By the way, part of Moonshiner 28 will be included in one of the guided tours at the 2012 Touring Weekend, headquartered in Maggie Valley, NC. Don’t miss it! Register online today!
