Ortlieb Dry Bag Saddlebags

For the rider who doesn’t want to invest in hard bags, or has several bikes that see occasional touring duty, soft luggage is the hands-down choice. The one glaring deficiency of most bags, however, is that they aren’t waterproof.

This sounds like a good marketing opportunity to me, and apparently the folks at Ortlieb, manufacturers of quality waterproof outdoor gear, think so as well. Their dry saddlebags, available through Aerostich, are made from the same 100 percent waterproof, abrasion–resistant, PVC material used for their popular dry duffel bags. The saddlebags are top-loading and close with the usual roll and clip design. The straps, which hold the rolled ends in place, double as a shoulder strap when the bags are off the bike. There is also an adjustable strap that runs across the top to keep things nice and tidy.

The bags are held together by two wide Velcroâ straps, offering a wide range of adjustability, and are secured to the bike by adjustable straps with clips. The sides making contact with the bike have finish-saving foam panels, but they aren’t heat-proof and must be protected from the exhaust system. Simple installation of one semi-rigid internal panel per bag is required. The bags are available in black or “pass the shades” yellow, and have reflectors on each end.

The rugged construction, ample capacity, and versatility of these bags make for an unbeatable combination of value and quality. Toss a pair on your bike and leave the rain covers and plastic bags at home.
