Superman's hometown

Virtually everyone knows that when the mythical Superman became an adult he worked for the Daily Planet newspaper in the city of Metropolis. But where was Metropolis located, exactly? In 1972 the Illinois State Legislature passed a resolution declaring that Metropolis, IL is the “Hometown of Superman.” Although the name “Metropolis” suggests a large city, this Ohio River town of less than 10,000 has long had super ambitions for their adopted superhero.

Upon arrival in Metropolis, IL, visitors are greeted by a 12-foot-high statue of the Man of Steel. Across the street is the sprawling Super Museum with an assortment of exhibits and souveniers dedicated to the comic book star. The town newspaper is even named “The Metropolis Planet,” and there are numerous other suggestive connections to this superhero throughout the community. Metropolis is located in Southern Illinois just across the Ohio River from Paducah, KY—check it out!
