Cold position

If your motorcycle has handguards, you surely have thought about this at least once. Imagine a super hot day and there’s just no airflow to your hands. How great would it be to just open up the handguards for a little breeze? And then there are the cold days, when your heated gear is already set to broil, and just a little extra wind protection around your hands would be nice. Guess what. Somebody finally makes it for select BMWs, KTMs, the Triumph Tiger 800, and the Honda Africa Twin!

ADVance Guard, normal and hot positionsEarlier this year I mounted the ADVance Guards on my 1190 Adventure. Installation was easy enough without even having to look at the instructions. (Of course, I read them first. Always read the manual/instructions!) The stock handguards are plastic, which means they’re lighter than the ADVance Guards, but they also break easier. I’ll take a little extra weight for some increased protection. Back to the multifunctionality of the new handguards, though. In the regular position, they’re about as big as the stock ones. After opening three little screws (easy to grip, even with gloves on) that are held in place by plastic retainers so they won’t fall down, the shield can be extended upward by 50mm (about 2 inches). And for hot days, the insert, which comes in granite, black, or orange (for KTMs naturally), can be popped out and then stored somewhere.

These aftermarket handguards really are next-level and beautifully made, too. The aluminum twin spar frame is well designed and constructed, and the plastic inserts are built to withstand road abuse. The orange inserts look like original KTM orange, and the bright color adds a little extra safety in the visibility department.

So far I find myself riding with the extensions up on most normal days to get a little extra wind protection. In the rain, water reaches my jacket sleeve a little higher, so water isn’t as likely to get into my gloves. We have some hot days in North Carolina, and the extra airflow to the hands bumps up the comfort level a notch.
