The Dalles Oregon, hairpin curve

If you’re looking for gorgeous scenery and superb riding, it doesn’t get much better than the Columbia River Gorge area. You’ll experience hairpin curves and steep elevation changes, and the region is delightfully remote in many spots. Our Shamrock Tour® here was based out of The Dalles, which makes a perfect site for a multi-day tour. Your best bet for riding motorcycles in the Columbia River Gorge area is to plan your trip between late spring and early fall. We went in September and the weather was mild and traffic was minimal. You’ll never tire of the stunning vistas along this route; in fact, you’ll want to stop at nearly every overlook.

Along with the spectacular views and top-notch riding roads, you’ll find several notable points of interest to enjoy while off the bike.

  • Multnomah Falls
Situated 30 minutes outside of Portland, this 611-foot waterfall boasts a sensational display of power and beauty that you won’t want to miss if you’re in the area. You can enjoy views from the viewing area of the rock face opening, or walk a short, paved trail to Benson Bridge, which will give you an amazing view of the 69-foot drop below.
  • Shaniko
If you love ghost towns and relics of the past, Shaniko will make for a fun and interesting stop. While there’s a small population of under 40 people still living in the town, there is no shortage of old buildings, such as the City Hall, the jail, a post office, and a school. There’s also the popular Shaniko Livery Barn museum that is home to several antique cars kept in their original condition.
  • Rowena Crest Viewpoint, Mayer State Park
Be prepared for incredible panoramas when you visit this viewpoint. And if you’re lucky enough to be here when the spring wildflowers bloom, which typically happens in March or April, you’ll be in for an extra special treat. There is also plenty of outdoor activities, such as picnicking, swimming, fishing, and more.
  • Stonehenge Memorial
This site features an impressive, full-scale replica of the ancient Stonehenge structure in England. Don’t forget your camera! You’re going to want pics!
  • Vista House
Built in 1917, this unique and historic structure is located along the Columbia River Highway and provides a gift shop and gallery for visitors to enjoy while exploring the Columbia River Gorge.
