Nicky Hayden Statue Unveiled

Nicky Hayden’s hometown of Owensboro, KY, recently unveiled a statue commemorating the life and accomplishments of their late motorcycle road-racing champion. Mayor Tom Watson proclaimed June 9 (6/9) Nicky Hayden Day, referencing Nicky’s racing number, 69. Mayor Watson said, “He (Nicky) was not only a world-class motorcycle champion, he was a world-class person, and we are proud that he called Owensboro home.” Commissioned by the city and the extended Hayden family, a bronze sculpture was created by George Lundeen. The ceremony, held at the Owensboro Convention Center, was attended by local residents and Nicky Hayden fans from as far away as England. Nicky’s older brother, Tommy, noted, “This event and this sculpture mean a great deal to our family.”

Before his untimely death on May 22, 2017, Nicky Hayden had earned many awards, including the 1997 AMA Dirt Track Horizon award, 1999 AMA 600cc Supersport Championship, 2002 AMA Superbike Championship, 2003 MotoGP Rookie of the Year award, and the 2006 MotoGP World Championship.
