Veterans Charity Ride to Sturgis

The 2017 Veterans Charity Ride to Sturgis starts in two weeks and will give 20 wounded veterans an all-expenses paid trip to the 77th annual Sturgis Motorcycle Rally. The ride offers veterans a unique brand of motorcycle therapy.

In 2014, Army Airborne Paratrooper Dave Frey, on a solo trip to Sturgis, met a fellow paratrooper and they talked about the challenges veterans face after returning from combat. Having ridden for 45 years, Frey came up with the idea of giving wounded veterans the chance to ride to Sturgis, then convinced his friend, Emmy award-winning director, Robert Manciero, to film the ride. Frey, an Indian Motorcycle owner, knew they needed motorcycles and support, and contacted Indian. The first charity ride to Sturgis began in 2015.

Veterans Charity Ride to SturgisThe Hero’s Ride of A Lifetime campaign gives the public an opportunity to nominate two veterans to join this adventure. This year, Indian and Veterans Charity Ride to Sturgis have chosen Corporals Joshua Stein (U.S. Army, Ret.) and Neil Frustaglia (U.S. Marines, Ret.), both of whom lost their legs above the knee during combat operation in Iraq.

All participants will be flown to Los Angeles on July 26. On July 28, they’ll set off for a nine-day, six-state cross-country motorcycle trip through California, Nevada, Utah, Colorado, and Wyoming, ending in Sturgis, SD. On the way, they’ll experience the beauty of national parks, large and small towns, and meet with fellow veterans and supporters. After making their grand entrance at the rally on August 5, they’ll spend the week celebrating with events, concerts, surprise excursions, and rides through the Black Hills. They’ll also participate in the Freedom Celebration Ride as special guests. This ride, sponsored by Sturgis Buffalo Chip, is a fundraiser with all proceeds going to veterans charities.
