Polaris Slingshot: Business in the Front, Party in the Back…It’s a car, it’s a bike, no—it’s the Slingshot! The Slingshot from Polaris is the answer to a question no one was asking—what happens when you cross a Can Am Spyder with a GM sedan? The Slingshot takes the two wheels in front, one in the back formula of the CanAm and a 2.4 liter four cylinder GM power plant and five-speed transmission (with reverse) and adds side by side seating for two to make what is basically a hybrid car/trike. Legally, though, it’s a motorcycle requiring a motorcycle endorsement and, in states where necessary, a helmet.

Polaris is not the first power sports company to take a stab at a machine like the Slingshot. KTM made the X-Bow several years ago and then there’s “cars” like the Ariel Atom which are quite similar. What is unique about the Slingshot, however, is its affordable price. The base model starts at $19,999 with the upmarket SL going for $23,999. Compare that with the relatively exotic nature of the X-Bow and the Atom, and the Slingshot starts to look like a bargain. In fact, while those two machines seem to be merely toys for the wealthy, the Slingshot has a chance to appeal to a much more middle-class buyer.

Performance should be pretty impressive. The 2,384cc DOHC GM four-cylinder pumps out a claimed 173 horsepower and 166 pound feet of torque to propel the Slingshot’s 1,743-pound curb weight (for the SL). That puts its power to weight ratio at around 10 pounds per horsepower (without passengers)—better than most cars and worse than most motorcycles. Still, the Slingshot adds a dusting of practicality with built in lockable storage, a 9.8-gallon fuel tank, and adjustable seating for two. A more detailed look at the Slingshot will be featured in an upcoming issue of RoadRUNNER.

What do you think? Does the Polaris Slingshot interest you?
