Sturgis Motorcycle Rally Donates $50,000 to CharitiesSturgis Motorcycle Rally, Inc. (SMRi), the not-for-profit organization that sponsors a weeklong event in the Black Hills of South Dakota, has donated $50,000 to the Sturgis Rally Charities Foundation. Run by volunteers, SMRi raises funds by collecting fees from the hundreds of vendors that attend the yearly celebration, which includes bike shows, concerts, and races. The mayor, local legislators, and celebrities also take part in the festivities by heading up an escorted VIP ride.

The group’s goal is to promote the rally in order to provide a charitable return for the greater Sturgis area. As a result, schools, libraries, athletic programs, the arts, veterans, the food pantry, senior citizens, and the Sturgis Motorcycle Museum benefit. Beginning as a one-day affair with nine racers and a handful of attendees in 1938, the rally currently draws nearly a half million visitors each year.
