2012 Touring Weekend Pre-ride: What You Can Look Forward To

May 11, 2012 View Comments by

Last weekend Christa, Zane, and I met in Maggie Valley, the meeting point of the 2012 Touring Weekend, to test the layout of the routes, set lunch places, and make sure the roads are where they are supposed to be. Who knows, maybe they moved. Of course it’s a great excuse to ride in the western North Carolina mountains, which, in my opinion, is the best riding area in the country.

Day 1: Testing the unguided tour option for Thursday

This was initially planned as a geocaching tour, but after a frustrating day with 0 out of 8 caches found, we decided to put a different spin on it. The details will be announced later. I can share, though, that you’ll need to bring a camera. The route leads to Deal’s gap.

Day 2: North

The original route turned out to be way too long. We left at 9 a.m. and returned at 6 p.m., and we were dragging foot pegs regularly. The loop will include Mount Mitchell, North Carolina’s highest mountain.

Day 3: South

Highlands is always a highlight. An easy to follow loop, and we even included a very technical part that adds about an hour to the trip. You’ll get your workout.

See you in Maggie Valley!

As long as I can grab a handlebar, I'll ride it. Trail riding is becoming my favorite hobby as of late. Hope to meet you on the road.
