M.A.D Motorcycle. Art. Design is a multi-media, experiential exhibition combining art, sound, industrial design and cultural elements that will be held at GreenHill in Greensboro, NC, from February 3 – June 8, 2017. GreenHill is dedicated to promoting the visual arts of North Carolina. The organization is collaborating with University of North Carolina School of the Arts (UNCSA) on the installation.

The Experience

Visitors to M.A.D will walk into the exhibition, entering through a “lifestyle gallery” where they will encounter cultural elements related to the motorcycle, from authentic motorcycle clothing and accessories from the ’30s – ’60s, to posters and memorabilia. Further, through custom made saloon doors, there is a built-in “biker bar” with a graffiti wall and fully stocked bar (for events only).

The Gallery will showcase 24 motorcycles owned by North Carolina collectors and dealerships, selected by Laura Way, GreenHill’s executive director, and Oscar “Ozzie” Scofield, past chairperson of the American Motorcycle Heritage Foundation. Featured bikes include an 1898 Thomas Auto-Bi, a replica of James Dean’s 1955 Triumph Trophy, and more, each carefully placed so that visitors can take in all angles.

Viewers will be led through an exhibit created by Charlotte artist Ivan Toth Depeña that crystallizes the experience of riding a motorcycle. It includes projections of GoPro footage, racing tail lights, flashing red LED strips, and a large-scale vinyl design that wraps around the exterior walls of The Gallery. Depeña worked in partnership with two UNCSA students.

Admission is $8 per person for visitors 16 and older. Programming will be ongoing, starting with a Members and Sponsors Opening on February 3 at 5:30 PM, and First Friday with M.A.D house-band Elemeno on February 3 from 6 – 9:00 p.m. A kick-off party, Leather & Lace, will be held on February 11 from 7 – 11:00 pm.
