Yamaha FZ-03 Coming for 2016?New Naked R3-

In the July/August ’15 issue we reviewed Yamaha’s YZF-R3 sportbike and found a lot to like about the small machine. However, as touring motorcyclists, we’re almost always more interested in naked machines as they tend to be more comfortable and practical for long distance riding than their sportier cousins. Recently photos appeared on Yamaha Japan’s website of a new 2016 model called the MT-03, which is clearly a naked version of the R3. (Yamaha uses the MT prefix for its naked bikes in the European market.)

Of course, we don’t know yet if or when the MT-03 will be introduced to the U.S. market, but it would seem highly improbable that the new bike (likely dubbed the FZ-03 in America) won’t be announced soon. Yamaha was a little late to the game introducing the YZF-R3 in the wake of Honda’s CBR250R and CBR300R, Kawasaki’s Ninja 300, and KTM’s RC390. It looks like the tuning fork company is looking to catch up by releasing a naked version so quickly on the heels of the R3.
