Overland Expo West 2015Off-road Warriors Unite! –

I recently had the opportunity to attend what is billed as “The premier event for overland adventure travel” otherwise known as the Overland Expo. Held for the third year in a row in Flagstaff, AZ, the Expo offers plenty to see and do for those of us who like to stray from the beaten path. Be it on two or four wheels, adventure travelers from near and far were in attendance.

Overland Expo West 2015While it was hard to ignore the unseasonably cold and wet weather, it didn’t dampen the spirits of those who came to the three-day event. The top shelf instructors from RawHyde were on hand and I had a chance to watch them demonstrate what large adventure bikes are capable of in the right hands. For anyone looking to improve their off pavement skill set, this was the place to be.

The folks from Zero Motorcycles were offering demo rides and I had a chance to take a spin on the stealthy Zero DS. Admittedly I was a bit skeptical at first of the silent, clutch-less bike, but once I threw a leg over and headed up the trail, I found the Zero to be responsive and quite good in the dirt.

Overland Expo West 2015Of particular interest to myself, and more than a few others, was the Honda CB500X “Adventure” bike on display. This creation is the result of a partnership between Giant Loop and UK-based Rally Raid. The basic Adventure kit includes parts to transform the Honda CB500X into a very worthy off-road companion. After the Overland Expo, British rally racer Jenny Morgan from Rally Raid Products is set to ride the CB-X Adventure Honda across the U.S. and back again via the Trans-America Trail.

Along with classes, programs, and clinics, several vendors were on hand to help riders get outfitted for their next big journey. Everything from riding gear and camping equipment to safety and maintenance items, all aimed at making long distance travel more comfortable, safe, and enjoyable.

Overland travel has most certainly entered the mainstream and those looking for the right bike, gear, training, and advice, definitely can’t go wrong. If you missed the event, there’s good news as Overland Expo East is scheduled for October 2–4 at Taylor Ranch in Asheville, NC. More info is available at www.overlandexpo.com
