Review: Scorpion EXO-R2000 HelmetThe old adage “you get what you pay for” isn’t always true; in some cases you get more. Premium helmets generally command a premium price, but the feature-packed Scorpion EXO-R2000 offers a long list of amenities for less than $400.

Starting with performance ratings, the R2000 meets both Snell M2010 and DOT standards. The R2000’s shell is constructed of a five-layer blend of fiberglass, aramid, and organic poly-resin fibers. Scorpion developed the Thermodynamic Composite Technology (TCT) process used to produce the shell, and the R2000’s is constructed in four sizes to accommodate a wide range of heads. The helmet features a quick-release system that allows emergency responders to quickly remove the helmet’s cheek pads prior to taking the helmet off, thus minimizing the chance of additional neck trauma. The release straps on the underside of the helmet are red in color and marked “emergency” to increase the likelihood that they will be noticed and used.

To personalize fit, the R2000 is equipped with adjustable cheek pads that are inflated and deflated via a push-to-inflate pump and air release valve located inside the bottom of the chin protector portion of the helmet. Both are easy to use, and the inflatable pads make a noticeable difference in the fit of the helmet. A substantial neck roll helps block wind and noise, though it can give the impression that the helmet is too small when putting it on or taking it off, but the fit returns to normal once the neck roll clears the head. There is also an aero skirt to prevent wind from entering under the chin area. It can be easily removed in warmer weather if more airflow is desired. The neck roll, cheek pads, and crown liner are all removable and washable, and the owner’s manual provides clear diagrams and instructions should you decide to freshen up the helmet. The KwickWick II helmet liner fabric is anti-microbial and designed to maximize comfort over a wide range of temperatures.

For warm weather, the R2000 has six air intake ports in the front of the helmet and 10 rearward exhaust ports. The intake adjustments can be operated while wearing gloves (with a little practice). Airflow seems to be a bit more substantial than with other helmets that I’ve owned, and it can be increased by placing the face shield lock/vent lever in the vent position, which allows the shield to open slightly. This three-position lever also permits the shield to be locked in the closed position or remain unlocked. The shields can be easily removed for cleaning or replacement through the Ellip-Tec ratchet system. It works well and has proven to be trouble-free on my older Scorpion helmet. The R2000 comes with both clear and dark smoke-tinted, fog-free shields that offer 100 percent UV protection and a hardened, scratch-resistant coating.

The EXO R2000 features sleek, aerodynamic styling and is available in a selection of both solid colors and graphics. The silver helmet tested has a gloss finish with a slight metal flake effect. The R2000 is extremely comfortable, and I found it to be significantly quieter than most helmets due to the tighter fitting neck roll and aero skirt. On jackets with high collars, expect some contact between the neck roll and collar. This could possibly cause accelerated wear of the neck roll fabric and jacket collar over time in some cases. Head movement was not limited, but the contact and resulting slight drag were noticeable. Most owners will probably opt to remove the chin skirt in warmer weather to increase airflow, which will decrease the contact area.

The Scorpion EX0-R2000 is an impressive helmet that blends protection, comfort, and style into a well executed, moderately priced package that deserves the attention of anyone considering a helmet purchase.
