RoadRUNNER's Bucket List Roads: Grand Army of the Republic HwyThe Pennsylvania portion of U.S. Route 6 runs east to west near the state’s northern border with New York. The entire transcontinental length of U.S. 6 is also known as the Grand Army of the Republic Highway, named in honor of soldiers who fought in the American Civil War. This is a laid-back cruise with beautiful scenery, charming villages, and historic sites.

Points of Interest: The following four stops are recommended:

  • Steamtown National Historic Site: One of America’s premiere museums dedicated to steam train transportation. Find it at: 150 S Washington Ave, Scranton, PA, (570) 340-5200, www.nps.gov/stea/index.htm.
  • Wellsboro Diner: Stop for breakfast, lunch, or dinner at this quintessential small town diner. Find it at 19 Main St, Wellsboro, PA, (570) 724-3992.
  • Pennsylvania Lumber Museum: A recreated turn-of-the 20th century lumber mill and camp with themed exhibits and a visitor center. Find it at 5660 U.S. Route 6 West, Ulysses, PA, (814) 435-2652, www.lumbermuseum.org.
  • Kinzua Bridge State Park: The 329-acre Kinzua Bridge State Park offers visitors a chance to walk the Kinzua Bridge Skywalk. Once considered the longest and highest railroad bridge (2,053 feet long and 301 feet high), the viaduct was partially destroyed by a tornado in 2003. Find it at 1721 Lindholm Rd, Mt. Scenery: Historic sites and museums, heavily forested mountain ridges, narrow cultivated valleys, and flowing streams and rivers.

Curves: Mostly sweeping curves and dramatic changes in elevation

Traffic: Usually light to moderate, except around Scranton, PA

Distance: Approximately 400 miles

Time Required: Two to three days one-way

Technical Difficulty: Moderate to low
