RoadRUNNER’s Bucket List Roads: Valley Of The Gods

RoadRUNNER’s Bucket List Roads: Valley Of The GodsFR 242 is an unpaved road that runs through the eerie sandstone formations in the Valley of the Gods. This valley is a smaller scale (and more isolated) version of Monument Valley, some 30 miles to the southwest. Many of the helicopter flying scenes in the 1980s TV series Airwolf were filmed here. The western end of the road joins UT SR-261 (aka the Moki Dugway), shortly before its unpaved, switchback ascent up onto Cedar Mesa.

Scenery: Breathtaking!

Curves: Many curves and elevation changes on loose, sometimes rugged, surfaces

Traffic: Virtually none

Distance: Approximately 20 miles one-way

Time Required: One to two hours, depending on the number and duration of stops

Technical Difficulty: Relatively easy for skilled riders on dual sport and adventure motorcycles. Although it’s possible for experienced riders on street bikes to negotiate the roads in good weather (because I’ve seen them do it), I don’t recommend it.
