Alpinestars Jet Road GORE-TEX GlovesWhen it comes to thick, waterproof, cold-weather gloves, you have to be careful not to judge the book by its cover. A pair of gloves may look warm and waterproof in the store (or online), but a hundred miles down the road in January its true colors will come out. So let’s get this out of the way right off the bat. If you’re planning on riding long distances in temperatures close to (or below) freezing, first off, you’re probably crazy! Secondly, these aren’t the gloves for you. At 40 degrees or so, with no heated grips or additional wind protection, my hands began to get quite cold after about 30 minutes. At these temperatures, you’re better off with either heated grips or heated gloves. Where these gloves really shine is in the more moderate 40 to 70 degree range. The Jet Road’s GORE-TEX membrane and clever over/under cuff design help the glove live up to its 100-percent waterproof claim. The glove also sets itself apart in terms of comfort; as long as the ambient temperature is in the aforementioned range, your hands will be quite happy. They’ll be protected too; the Jet Road uses an integrated, molded TPU knuckle guard and a full goatskin leather palm with additional padding in impact prone areas. That leather palm also gives you plenty of grip and dexterity, even when wet. Other nice touches include a stylus on both index fingers for working a GPS (they don’t work with most phone screens however) and the usual squeegee on the left thumb. The European sizing runs about one size smaller than usual as I generally wear a size Large and the XL fits me perfectly. For those looking for a waterproof glove for spring, fall, and moderate winters, the Jet Road GORE-TEX glove from Alpinestars just might be the ticket.
