Vespa’s 50cc Golden AnniversaryGrowing out of war-ravaged Italy in the late 1940s, the iconic Vespa soon came to symbolize the freedom and mobility of a new generation (with some help from the film Roman Holiday starring Audrey Hepburn and Gregory Peck). Rather surprisingly, however, the 50cc Vespa didn’t come on to the scene until 1963. Now, 50 years later, the baby Vespa is still going strong. To celebrate Piaggo, Vespa’s parent company, is seeking to once again showcase its smallest scooter as an economical and environmentally friendly alternative to other forms of transportation, even noting that the monthly payments on a 50cc Vespa can be lower than an unlimited monthly metro card in New York City.
