Retracing the Lewis & Clark Trail Across America – Day 10

Today was just an ordinary day: arctic cold, fuzzy buffalo, strange bovines, demanding travel gods, failure and hunger.

With morning temps in the low 60’s it did feel like the North Pole compared to our usual 90’s-100-degree temperatures when we set out.  It made for a very different ride, even though the landscape was much the same as the day before.  The cool temps, rolling hills and open prairie induced a mellow trance that had me daydreaming of the land long ago.  Soon a squint of the eyes would wash out the wire fences and blur the outlines of the cattle, making it easy to “see” the long lost buffalo that once roamed here in abundance.

More animals were about, as we saw a number of critters scurry across the road and an occasional cow or horse that had made it past the fence, where the grass was definitely greener.  Their proximity to the road brought me back to a crisp awareness, but that reality was soon upended when we came upon a trio of bovine highway workers–one on the left, two on the right.  With front hooves on the white line these big guys (and I mean big) clearly let us know they were in command of the road.  All they were missing was the SLOW/STOP sign on a pole.  Now, as I ride along, I see the cows in the field are watching us – seriously.  We may well be in a strange place where secret research or alien bodysnatching has significantly altered the fauna.  Or, it could just be that with so little traffic out here the cows are genuinely interested.

The travel gods demanded payment today – as we sat out a good portion of the day in a dealership as the Can-Ams underwent their essential first service.  We were given a place to hang out – an abandoned sales manager’s workstation overlooking the sales floor, a real perch for two big toy guys.  As you would expect, we did not close a sale.  And we missed lunch.  Really, just a regular day on the tour.
